ART SMART | START SMART | AN ARTS MART
An introduction to the art of computer literacy, creativity, communication, and comprehension.
Welcome to artsm.art, where the ART of learning begins with understanding what we’re looking at, what we’re reading, and what we’re creating.
Have you ever noticed how the same letters can tell different stories depending on where you put a space, a dot, or a slash?
Let’s find out!
Lesson 1: ART SMART
Our website address is:
artsm.art
Read it aloud.
ART SMART!
Now move the space.
ART SMART becomes ARTS MART.
Same letters. Same order. Different comprehension!
One encourages us to be smart about art. The other introduces a marketplace for the arts.
That’s the beginning of our lesson: how we arrange information changes how we understand it.
Lesson 2: START SMART
Now let’s add something to the beginning of our website address.
st.artsm.art
Read it aloud.
START SMART!
We’ve just created another level of our internet address.
It’s called a subdomain.
A subdomain is an additional name placed before the registered domain, separated by a dot.
Watch how our address grows:
| Website address | Read it aloud |
|---|---|
artsm.art | ART SMART |
st.artsm.art | START SMART |
learn.st.artsm.art | LEARN START SMART |
student.learn.st.artsm.art | STUDENT LEARN START SMART |
Every new level adds meaning to our address.
Our registered domain remains artsm.art. Each new name to its left creates another subdomain level.
And that is how we’re learning computer literacy through creativity!
Lesson 3: AN ARTS MART
Now let’s look at something different.
artsm.art/artsmart
Read it aloud.
AN ARTS MART!
Notice that we didn’t add another dot before our domain.
We added a slash and a path after it.
A slash / helps separate a website’s domain from the path to a page, lesson, or other resource.
Here’s the difference:
st.artsm.art is a subdomain.
artsm.art/artsmart is a path on our website.
Both can lead to something wonderful, but they are not the same thing.
At AN ARTS MART, we can imagine a place for artists, students, makers, and creative entrepreneurs to share what they create, learn how websites work, and explore the business of art.
Lesson 4: What’s Behind a Website?
Every website needs a little organization.
A domain name gives people an address to find.
Web hosting makes website files available over the internet.
WordPress is software we can use to create and manage websites.
Subdomains and paths help organize different destinations and experiences.
Think of it like creating your own art center. You give it a name, find a place for it, create the rooms, and invite people to explore.

Your First ART SMART Challenge
Create an imaginary website address of your own.
Read it aloud. Move the spaces. Look for new meanings.
Now imagine what you could create at that address.
Could it become a classroom, an art gallery, a family website, a community project, or your very own marketplace?
Remember, you don’t have to know everything before you begin.
You begin by learning.
And learning begins with comprehension.
Where Do We Go Next?
Our next destination is:
AN ARTS MART — artsm.art/artsmart
We’ll explore how art becomes a gallery, how a gallery becomes a marketplace, and how creators can learn to share their work with the world.
ART SMART. START SMART. LEARN START SMART. AN ARTS MART!
DOES THIS HELP® — Comprehension through creativity, communication, and computer literacy.
